Canada’s finest financial minds explain how to weather the current economic storm alongside special guest, CIMA President, Andrew Miskin.

Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) will be hosting a panel discussion on Alberta’s economy through the eyes of Canada’s finest financial minds. The event will provide guests with an opportunity to listen and share their views on unravelling Alberta’s provincial economic future within a global spectrum.

The event features guests from all realms of the financial world including Craig Wright who is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist RBC; Nola Heal ACMA who is CFO and VP at FLYHT Aerospace Solutions and Ian Murphy ACMA who is Vice President Enterprise Risk Management and Chief Compliance Officer at ATB Financial. Leading the panel is Michael Day ACMA. Andrew Miskin will share how CGMA’s global mindset can work in tandem with the Alberta economy on a provincial level.

Andrew Miskin FCMA CGMA
CIMA Global President 2016-17

Andrew is an experienced management consultant who has worked with senior executives all over the world.
Within CIMA, he has held a variety of roles including serving on the CIMA council, as Chairman of CIMA’s members' services committee and as Deputy President of the executive committee.
Andrew went to Cambridge University, where he studied Engineering. He started his career as an industrial engineer with Michelin Tyres and afterwards worked for Esso Petroleum, where he also took his CIMA qualifications. He was a direct entry Fellow in 1989 having won prizes at stages 2 and 4 of his CIMA exams.
25 years ago, Andrew moved to management consulting and has held senior leadership roles within Esso, KPMG, IBM, CSC and PricewaterhouseCoopers. During this time, he was mostly responsible for large client change programs.

 

From 2001 to 2005, Andrew was Partner in charge of the non-Financial Services, Commercial Consulting division for PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK. Between 2005 and 2008 Andrew set up and led their Consulting business across Europe. Following this, BP, Tui Travel and Syngenta were among his major clients.
Having been born and educated in Birmingham, his management consulting career allowed Andrew to live and work all over the world – from Paris, Iraq and Switzerland to Ukraine. Today, he lives in Greater London with his family.
Andrew retired from full time employment in 2012 and now undertakes pro-bono charitable consulting work through the auspices of the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants. In his spare time, he also runs the website for his London-based choir.

Andrew is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is a Chartered Engineer.

Nola Heale is Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer of FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd. FLYHT is a leading provider of satellite communications, flight tracking, aircraft health monitoring and live flight data recorder (“Black box”) streaming solutions. Nola is also Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary for the company and oversees the Quality Control department.

  Having accumulated her designations and experience on three continents in industries as diverse as Public Accounting practice; food and goods manufacturing; freight forwarding and logistics; power generation and transmission, and even fraud investigations and prosecution Nola relocated from South Africa to Canada in 2000 and has since expanded the industries to include oil and gas, other services, green energy generation, and now aerospace. Although currently heading up a public company and Past President of Financial Executives International, she has also spent significant time with private companies and not-for-profit organizations.
Nola holds a Bachelor of Commerce, and a Bachelor of Accountancy degrees, and is a graduate of the Advanced Program of Canadian Board Diversity Council. She is a Certified Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant here in Canada, a Chartered Accountant in South Africa and an Associate Chartered Management Accountant, Chartered Global Management Accountant. Nola is a member of Womens’ Executive Network, the Institute of Corporate Directors and in 2014 was elected to the Diversity Top 50.

As chief economist, RBC Craig leads a team of economists providing economic, fixed income and foreign exchange research to RBC clients. Craig is a regular contributor to a number of RBC publications and is a key player in delivering economic analysis to clients and the media through the Economics Department’s regular economic briefings.


 

A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Toronto, Craig was appointed Chief Economist in 2001 having joined RBC 1994 after working at another financial institution for seven years. Craig is a participant in a number of the key RBC internal committees and is a member of the CD Howe Monetary Policy Council, Wilfrid Laurier School of Business and Economics Dean’s Advisory Council and the British Columbia Economic Forecast Council.

Craig and his wife Susan live in Toronto with their three children Emily, Bradley and Jacob.

I
'm Ian Murphy and I lead the Enterprise Risk and Compliance teams at ATB. We focus on the identification, assessment and management of risks facing the organisation. My team includes Enterprise and Operational Risk, Stress Testing, Business Continuity Management, Insurance and all aspects of Regulatory Compliance.

  After qualifying as an accountant, I started my career in banking in London for a large investment bank before taking senior leadership roles managing finance and risk for various financial institutions in Asia. After a 15 year career in large scale Investment Banking I helped to found a boutique asset management and trading company, specialising in a niche market. I was also a founding shareholder of a logistics company in East Africa, in addition to running a number of start ups in the renewable energy technology space.

I am a proud CIMA member in addition to recently completing the Institute of Corporate Director requirements (ICD.D) which has added to my board governance education.

My passion is cycling, and I have participated in a number of multi stage mountain bike races as well as triathlons, most recently completing Ironman Canada. I am an average golfer but play whenever I can. Competing reinforces the drive that we must have to help drive business forward, and setting personal goals keeps us passionate in all that we do to meet those challenges.

  Michael Day ACMA CGMA

Mike Day is a former British Army Major and Senior Finance Manager currently studying Strategic Business Management (MSc) with Manchester Metropolitan University. During his 23 years service, he had the honour and privilege to lead and manage exceptional teams whilst travelling widely.

As an Internal Financial Consultant within Management Accountancy Services (Army), he cost modelled and formally reviewed overseas establishments across multiple functions and made recommendations regarding structures and systems for strategic option generation. Prior to this he was the Senior Finance Manager for the British Army Training Unit Suffield, Alberta; responsible to the Commander for governance, internal controls, business strategy and finance within an organization comprising $2Bn+ multi-faceted equipment, 10KM² infrastructure and a 1600KM² estate.


 

Other roles have enabled him to live or work in Afghanistan, Cyprus, The Falkland Islands, Norway, and Germany where as Controller, his Department was awarded “Best within 1 (UK) Armoured Division 2011-2012” (50% of the British Army’s high readiness forces).

Mike is married to Claire has 2 children, Olivia and Matthew. He enjoys being a volunteer with CIMA Canada and skiing very badly in the beautiful rocky mountains of Alberta.
